Art Exhibit at Von Liebig in Naples Florida
Last night I attended a reception for the opening of the exhibit "Naples Collects" at the Von Liebig Art Center. This is the first time that such a compilation of artwork, owned by private local collectors, has been amassed in Collier County.
The wide range of media included paintings, sculptures and photographs. Styles varied from abstract to cubism to pop art and more. Needless to say, it was quite interesting to see what other Neapolitans collect.
Although the exhibit included a few masters such as Calder and Chagall, my favorite was a Picasso etching. On display was La Grande Corrida Avec Femme Torero, a very intricately etched composition depicting interlocking geometric shapes of all the participants of a bullfight. Produced in 1934, it was an obvious precursor to his massive masterpiece, Guernica which was Picasso's protest of the atrocities of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939.) Many of the same elements, movement, and expression of cruelty were evident in both works.
The Naples Collects exhibit will be on display from January 10th through January 25th.
